Revelation 17 presents one of the most vivid and mysterious visions in the Book of Revelation, offering powerful imagery and prophetic insight into the fate of worldly corruption and spiritual infidelity. In this chapter, John is approached by one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, and he is invited to witness the judgment of a symbolic figure—the great prostitute—who sits upon many waters. Her influence is vast, stretching across nations, and she is said to have enticed the kings of the earth into acts of immorality. John is taken in the spirit into a wilderness, where the vision unfolds in greater detail.
There, he sees a woman seated on a scarlet beast. This beast is adorned with blasphemous names and has seven heads and ten horns, suggesting immense power and opposition to God. The woman herself is dressed in luxurious garments of purple and scarlet, glittering with gold, precious stones, and pearls. In her hand is a golden cup, but it is filled with abominations and impurities. On her forehead is a title filled with symbolic weight: "Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the Abominations of the Earth." She is intoxicated not with wine, but with the blood of the saints—those who bore witness to Jesus and were martyred for their faith. This shocking image deeply astonishes John.
The angel begins to interpret the vision, revealing that the beast represents a system or power that once was, now is not, and yet will come again before heading toward destruction. The people of the world, whose names are not found in the Book of Life, will marvel at the beast, seduced by its power and mystery. The seven heads of the beast are revealed to be both seven mountains and seven kings. Of these, five have already fallen, one remains, and another is yet to come for a short time. There is also mention of an eighth king, who belongs to the seven but is destined for destruction.
The ten horns are ten kings who have not yet received kingdoms, but who will be granted authority for a short time alongside the beast. These rulers are united in purpose and will give their power to the beast. Together, they will wage war against the Lamb—Jesus Christ—but the Lamb will overcome them, for He is the Lord of lords and King of kings. Those with Him, described as called, chosen, and faithful, will share in His victory.
In a dramatic twist, the angel reveals that the waters where the woman sits symbolize peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages. Despite their alliance, the beast and the ten horns will eventually turn on the prostitute. They will strip her bare, consume her flesh, and burn her with fire. This betrayal fulfills God’s purpose, showing that even evil forces will unknowingly serve His divine plan until His words come to completion.
The final line of the chapter declares that the woman is the great city that reigns over the kings of the earth. This vision of power, seduction, betrayal, and divine justice speaks deeply to the struggle between worldly empires and the kingdom of God. With its striking symbols and prophetic depth, revelation 17 remains one of the most powerful chapters describing the ultimate downfall of corruption and the triumph of the Lamb.
